Flash Templates Tutorials - Editing a symbol
Editing a symbol
When you are editing a symbol, Flash updates all instances in the clip. You are editing symbols in symbols editing mode.
There are two modes of editing. You can edit a symbol in a way that you see only the edited symbol, or you can use Edit in Place action for editing symbol along with the rest of the objects in the working field. At the same time other objects are broken down to distinguish them from the symbol you are editing.
To edit a symbol in place - select a symbol instance at the working field, right mouse click and select Edit in Place.
Editing character in a new window - select a symbol instance in the working field and right click then and select Edit in New Window. Double click above the symbol icon in symbols library window.
Editing character in Edit mode - select a symbol paste in the working field and select Edit / Edit Symbol, or right mouse click and select Edit. Select a symbol in the library window and then select Edit from Options menu in the library window. Symbol, correspondent to an instance, is opened in editing mode. When finished editing, all instances of this symbol in the clip will be updated.
When editing a symbol, use any means of drawing, import any media or create instances of other symbols.
Finishing symbol editing and returning to clip editing: select Edit / Edit Movie. Click above the word "scene" in the left-hand corner of the timeline.
Using symbols from other clips of other characters: you can open other clips libraries without actually opening clips themselves, and you can use symbols from the library of another clip in the current clip.
Sometimes it is useful to replace the current clip symbol with the updated version from another clip without changing all its instances in the working field. To use a symbol from another clip in the current clip: select File / Open as Library and select the clip. The clip library will appear in its own window. In this case, actions in the Options menu and icons in the bottom left corner are unavailable. Drag the symbol from the window to the current scene, Flash will create a symbol instance in the working field and will copy the symbol itself into the library of the current clip. Symbol is still available as a library symbol of the original clip.
