Magic Wand Tool
Making selections manually with Lasso tools is toilsome and does not always let you achieve the best results, especially when you have to select objects with many details like hair. Photoshop has a special tool - Magic Wand tool that makes selections based on the analysis of the pixel colors. Magic Wand tool can work in two modes with or without Contiguous option enabled. You already know about this option from our tutorial on the Paint Bucket tool. Basically, magic Wand and Paint Bucket tools work similarly and have same settings. The only exception is that Paint Bucket tool fills the areas of similar color with color while Magic Wand tool selects them.
When in working Contiguous mode, magic Wand tool will select areas with similar colors only if they are next to each other, while when the Contiguous mode is disabled it will select all pixels of the image that are of the similar color with selected pixel.
The Tolerance setting of the Magic Wand tool sets the color similarity extent in the range from 0 to 255.
