How can I upgrade my Zen Cart?
In case you are looking to upgrade your current
Zen Cart store, you will require FTP program, text editor, access to your MySQL database and Control Panel which were applied when installing and customizing Zen Cart.
Before doing any changes, make sure you have made a backup of your site files and database.
Extract the copy of the new Zen Cart version from zip file, upload it to your web server and install it into the separate database. (Now you can try the new elements introduced with Zen Cart version.)
Now unzip a copy of the original Zen Cart files for the version you have installed previously and place into a separate folder on your PC.
Remember to compose a list of all ads-ons you have established as it will diminish the source of the differences you may find between the two versions of Zen Cart. WinMerge tool may help you to compare the original Zen Cart files with your backup files. Remember to make a list of changed files.
Now unzip the desired version of Zen Cart (obviously the latest one) composing the already third directory on your PC. Go back to the list of changes you have made and view every 'changed' file and change the old version with the new one. However, be careful when changing program codes at core components (and again WinMerge may assist you here).
Finally, make the new database where you can install the new Zen Cart version. Note that your backup should contain the latest customers' orders or registrations. Restore the database from the backup into your new database although make certain that this folder contains "/includes/configure.php" and "/admin/includes/configure.php" files, if not copy - them from the old folder. Make sure that all your path settings and database names match the new directory/database structures.
Upload the files to the server from the edited new version. Now run /zc_install/index.php and select 'Upgrade' when ready. (In case you are not offered 'Upgrade' button, check your configure.php settings because of the possible error occurred.)
Eventually, you can test the customization and edit it if there is some need. Since you are satisfied with the result, you can start your web store then. In the admin area put your shop into 'Down for Maintenance' mode but make certain you have added your own IP address to the list of allowed addresses to preview the site.
