PostgreSQL is to replace MySQL?
PostgreSQL 8.3 enhanced with lots of new features is confronting the billion dollar MySQL.
Almost a year has passed since PostgreSQL 8.2 release and now we welcome PostgreSQL 8.3 open source database that is going HOT. When saying HOT we refer to Heap Organized Tuples being a key feature of the new PostgreSQL.
Besides HOT which improved a throughput for database application from 20-30% up to 300%, there are another significant highlights like XML , enumerated data type support, full text search, data warehouses and self-tuning features.
PostgreSQL team has also worked on its Windows version moving to MS Visual C++ in order to improve stability and performance on Windows.
And again, as usual, after PostgreSQL 8.3 is released, PostgreSQL developers have already started working on PostgreSQL 8.4. They are willing to include PL/PSM to overlap it with IBM DB2 and MySQL.
