Search Engine Optimization Part 6
SEO for HTML Templates. Analyzing the competitor code.

We went over the major HTML tags that should be used for HTML template based website optimization. Now it is time to implement the knowledge gained and analyze the weak points of your competitors in this branch.

We took "bodybuilding" as an example main goal and selected several keywords for this. The example keyword we will use for our homepage is "bodybuilding guide". Let us search for this keyword in Google and analyze the top-ranked sites' code. At this moment the top-ranked page in Google for this keyword is http://bodybuilding.com/fun/exercises.htm.

I have checked the header of the top-ranked site and here is what I've found:

<title>Bodybuilding.com - #1 Exercises Guide - Over 300 Exercises!</title>
<meta name="description" content="Learn how to perform every exercise, what bodyparts they work, and more! Pictures and videos.">
<meta name="keywords" content="Bodybuilding.com, #1 Exercises Guide - Over 300 Exercises!, bodybuilding exercises exercise guide guides pics videos animations video pictures descriptions chest abs triceps biceps back how learn form workouts">
<link rel="stylesheet" href="http://www.bodybuilding.com/bbstyle.css" type="text/css">

<style type="text/css">

<script type="text/javascript">

<!-- Begin
function popUp(URL) {
day = new Date();
id = day.getTime();
eval("page" + id + " = window.open(URL, '" + id + "', 'toolbar=0,scrollbars=1,location=0,statusbar=0,menubar=0,resizable=1,width=620,height=420,left = 212,top = 84');");
// End -->

1. We can see that keywords are not used within <h1> and <h2> tags in the title. So we can use keywords in those tags and be one step ahead potentially. Note this and apply to your code.
Check whether the keywords are used within the <title> tag. In this case the exact phrase "bodybuilding guide" is not used, but we can find these two words separately within the tag. Note this and use "bodybuilding guide" as a single phrase within your <title> tag.
Check whether they use text in bold, italic and strong. They did not use it in header much, so we can use it too and use more effectively.

2. Now let's analyze the whole homepage code. Check for bold, italic and strong code tags as well. They are used so we can use them as well and even use more effectively. Use <strong> tag instead of bold, implement the knowledge you've gained previously.
Check the usage of <alt> tag for images. It is not used by our "future-ex-champions", so we can go ahead and use this tag for your images to be one more step ahead.

3. Analyze the HTML code of top 5 websites and take the best and even do more. This will be the base for your launch to the top of the search engines and we'll teach you more further on. Be on lookouts for our SEO news and SEO tutorials for HTML templates.
